Miguel Atwood-Ferguson released Ananta: Spirit of Coltrane on October 30 through Impulse! Records. The composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist leads a twenty-one-piece ensemble in a project honoring John Coltrane during his centennial year.
Contributors include Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, Shabaka Hutchings, Azar Lawrence and Joel Ross. Poet aja monet also contributes an original composition, extending the tribute beyond instrumental interpretations.
The repertoire includes “A Love Supreme, Pt. II (Resolution),” “Central Park West,” “My Favorite Things” and “Naima.” “Giant Steps” is recast as a ballad, one example of the project’s approach to translating familiar material rather than reproducing every original arrangement. Impulse!, the label associated with much of Coltrane’s essential work, provides the setting for a tribute connecting that legacy with a contemporary collective.
