Mei Semones released “2 Hands” and an accompanying video on October 29. It is the second preview of Howl, scheduled for January 15 through Verve and Interscope, following the album’s title track.
The song centers on commitment to a life in music, with lyrics moving between Japanese and English. Drummer Ransom McCafferty adds tabla to the ensemble’s percussion palette. Semones’ work brings jazz, bossa nova, samba and math-rock influences into the same setting.
Jacob Rodier directed the video in the Bronx, featuring Semones alongside her regular band: McCafferty, violist Noah Leong, violinist Claudius Agrippa and bassist Noam Tanzer. The performance-focused concept reflects the song’s appreciation for that musical partnership. “2 Hands” gives listeners a second view of the upcoming album before the full sequence arrives in January.
