The Met has acquired thirty-eight paintings by Chang Dai-chien, also known as Zhang Daqian. Announced September 17, the group comes from the collection of the artist’s daughter, Sing Sheng Chang.
The museum presents the acquisition as an opportunity to examine the range of an artist whose career moved across continents and artistic traditions. The announcement illustrates Approach of the Storm, dated 1967, with its blue-green landscape and splashed-ink effects. Born in 1899, Chang spent later periods in places including Brazil, California and Taiwan. The new acquisition strengthens the institution’s holdings of a central figure in modern Chinese ink painting.
