The Met’s Cottage Industry: The Val-Kill Furniture Shop marks one hundred years since the workshop’s founding in 1926. The exhibition is on view through May 9, 2027.
More than forty works and associated materials connect the workshop’s furniture to its social and artistic ambitions. Founded by Eleanor Roosevelt, Nancy Cook, Marion Dickerman and Caroline O’Day, Val-Kill brought together artisans with differing backgrounds and training. The museum draws on loans from the National Park Service and Franklin D. Roosevelt Library alongside its collection. The presentation examines how historical furniture inspired a new craft enterprise and how makers adapted those forms for their own time.
