The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced September 21 that it would return a group of antiquities to the Hellenic Republic. The museum links the decision to research into collection histories and information from investigations.
The announcement identifies a gold-and-garnet pendant, a terracotta jug and a Roman marble head among three works whose return followed new information. It also addresses armor from Afrati in Crete, including helmets and protective guards. The Met describes continuing cooperation with Greece in connection with future loans. The report concerns the institution’s stated return decision and research process; it does not assign ownership histories beyond those documented in the museum’s release.
