Impulse! Records will release The Tiberi Tapes on November 6, bringing privately recorded John Coltrane performances into the public catalog after more than six decades. The announcement came September 23, on the centenary of Coltrane’s birth.
Saxophonist Frank Tiberi made the recordings in clubs in New York and Philadelphia beginning in 1960. They document Coltrane during a period of rapid development as a bandleader and improviser, preserving performances outside the more controlled conditions of studio sessions.
The collection is planned for four LPs, three CDs and digital services as part of the Coltrane 100 celebration. The label acknowledges the sonic limitations of the privately made tapes while emphasizing their historical value. For listeners exploring the centennial releases, the attraction is previously unavailable live evidence of Coltrane’s evolving work rather than a remaster of an already familiar studio album.
