An illustrated edition of Haruki Murakami’s Abandoning a Cat joined Penguin’s UK list on October 20. Philip Gabriel translates this reflection on memory, family and the author’s relationship with his father.

The publisher’s account connects that family history with the Second World War, his father’s haiku and teaching, and the long distance that developed between father and son. The work uses a remembered encounter with a cat as an entry point into a more difficult personal history. This release report describes the publisher’s newly listed edition; it does not imply that the text itself is appearing worldwide for the first time.
